Do you have an idea for how you can make the world a better place using blockchain technology? AlgoHUB and Malaysian Universities including UTS and USM, invite you to participate in the Blockchain for Good Intervarsity Hackathon.
This competition is all about ‘Blockchain for Good’, it’s time for students to showcase their innovative ideas for projects that could be built on the Algorand blockchain.
You’ll need to form a team of 2-4 participants and build your smart contracts in PyTeal. The finals will be held in person on 22nd October 2023 in Malaysia (the venue is to be confirmed), all other sessions will take place online. We will provide training in how to build smart contracts in PyTeal.
This competition is open for all current students who are enrolled at Universities in Malaysia. All students from multi disciplines are welcome to participate. Our goal is to create a diverse and inclusive community where everyone can contribute their unique ideas about how we can make the world a better place using blockchain technology.

What is Algorand?
Algorand is a proof of stake blockchain focused on decentralising trust and ensuring low fees and fast transactions. The Algorand Blockchain is Fast, Secure and Green. Algorand is known to be the sustainable blockchain, given its carbon negative status.

Which Malaysian Universities can participate in the Intervarsity Hackathon?
This Hackathon is organised with USM and UTM in Malaysia however we are inviting all Universities in Malaysia to be a part of this competition.

What if I am not a student?
The Malaysian Inter-varsity Hackathon is only open to students of Malaysian Universities. If you are not a current student, you can learn how to program on the Algorand Blockchain by attending the Algorand Bootcamps or completing AlgoHUB’s free PyTeal course.
What should a successful submission look like?
* Submission requirements for a video and presentation:
1. A 5 minute video ( max length) and a presentation deck is due on 2nd October
2. The presentation must include-
a. the problem statement – what is the issue that you are trying to solve and how is it a problem for the environment or social good?
b. the solution statement – how is your solution helping to solve the problem, how will you use blockchain technology and in particular the Algorand blockchain, help solve the problem
c. Features – What will your solution have
d. Who are the competitors – does your solution exist already, who are your competitors, how do you compare your product to other competitors in the market?
e. Team – Who is in your team and what role do they have
f. What is your strategy / roll out plan for the future?
3. Your video must show a working demo of a smart contract on the Algorand testnet and include all of the content outlined above as well. Maximum 5 minutes.

What are the prizes?
The winners will share in RM20000 in prizes
When does registration close?
Team registration closes on 10th of September 2023, PyTeal workshops will kick off on 14th August 2023, all sessions will be recorded.
Will I be assigned a mentor?
Yes you will be given a list of mentors which you will be able to contact for assistance. There will be weekly office hours where you can ask our trainer some questions.
